A Girl’s Bedroom

The latest from beloved contemporary, Irish playwright, Enda Walsh: an audience-immersion playlet. Enda (“Once” Musical) likes his audience to be involved, to have an experience! The experience of “A Girl’s Bedroom” is this: you and 4 or 5 other audience members are ushered into a four-walled, 10’x12’ (?) set that has been made up to represent a kind of shabby little girl’s bedroom. We are told that we may sit anywhere we like: on the bed, on a little desk chair, on a bean-bag chair. Interestingly, this feels a little creepy, as if we’re violating this little girl’s personal space. There’s even a suggestion (in my own mind) that we’re violating the little girl! Questions emerge: she’s not here, where is she? What are we doing here? Who are we in relation to her; we don’t belong here! Trespass.

A few moments after awkwardly positioning ourselves around the room, a recorded adult female voice comes on and starts telling this little girl’s story of leaving home. She speaks just above a...
